Tourism in a broader perspective

In September 2010 the first Dutch Bachelor of Science Tourism started in Breda. This academic programme deals with developments in tourism and the interrelationships between tourism, the economy, society and the environment. You will learn how to do research on tourism. After graduation as a scientific bachelor you can apply your knowledge on sustainable development of tourism, or continue your education with a Master of Science study, such as the MSc Leisure, Tourism and Environment, the MSc Management, Economics and Consumer Studies, or the MSc International Development Studies of Wageningen University.

World-wide tourism has firmly established itself as an industry of major importance. More than 4% of the world economy is driven by tourism, and more than 8% of the jobs in the world are related to tourism. But tourism is more than just a powerful economic force. Tourism activities affect nature, the environment and landscapes of tourism destinations. Tourism also changes the life worlds of individuals and cultures worldwide. Furthermore, tourism is very sensitive to global transformations. Acts of terrorism, economic recession, epidemics and climate change have a strong impact in the travel behaviour of tourists and the prosperity of tourist destinations.
